Redskins safety Su’a Cravens took to Twitter Monday to accuse Loudoun County police of racial profiling during a recent traffic stop. The second-year player, who has been inactive this season, posted videos in which he used profane language in blasting officers for singling him out, treating him roughly and falsely accusing him of smelling like marijuana, and he threatened to bring a lawsuit over the incident.
Cravens said he was followed to an Ashburn mall’s parking lot, pulled out of his car and “slammed” against it, placed in handcuffs and put in the back of a squad car for “supposedly doing 39 in a 35.” He added, “Not to mention he called for 4 more squad cars and cuffed and threatened my little brother for a grabbing his phone to record . . . And [you] wonder why we angry. Complete bulls—!”
According to news reports, Loudoun police said that they pulled Cravens over for traveling at 39 mph in a 25 mph zone near the Farmwell Station Middle School in Ashburn on Nov. 29. They said he was also cited for having an illegal tint on his car’s windows.
“I’m black, I’ve got tattoos on my neck and I’m out here in a nice car,” Cravens said in one of his videos, as he angrily explained why he thought the incident occurred. He said police searched his car for marijuana but found nothing, after having “passed up” a driver ahead of him who was clearly going faster.
“Why is that? We all know why,” Cravens, 22, said to the camera. Earlier in the video, he said, “I’ma sue the s— out of this man, racial profiling a– man. S— is ridiculous, in this day and age we’re still doing this s—.”
“Please excuse my language. I promise my parents raised an intelligent and respectful young man,” Cravens said on Twitter. “But this bulls— the reason why people dying and athletes taking knees! Stop ignoring it.”
A second-round pick out of Southern California in 2016, Cravens has not played this season after the Redskins placed him on the reserve/left squad list in September. Shortly before the season began, the former linebacker had surprised the team by announcing that he planned to retire rather than continue playing.
The Redskins talked Cravens out of retiring but deactivated him to give him time to work through what were initially described as personal issues. Last week, Cravens’s agent said his client had “received medical clearance to resume all football activities” after having “undergone targeted treatment and rehabilitation” for “post-concussion syndrome.”
“Su’a is excited and looking forward to the 2018 NFL season and the many years to follow,” the agent said. “Truth will be out soon I never just walk away come on now this all calculated thinking,” Cravens subsequently said on Instagram.
