    2017 has been the year of South! Several films grabbed headlines for their grand concepts, invincible box office figures and for the star themselves. A certain film also grabbed the limelight for changing its release date one too many times. Another came under the spotlight for the mega budget investment. Apart from films becoming a  topic of discussion, we got to witness a fairytale wedding of a very popular couple this year. Keeping side all the fun and entertainment, there were political agendas announced as well. Also, after fove long years, a song went on to become a worldwide rage.     Baahubali 2 – It’s not everyday a film becomes a phenomenon, but when it came to Baahubali, the magnum opus went on to become a revolution! After part 1 ended on a cliffhanger, fans were already curious and eagerly waiting to know why Kattappa killed Baahubali. The buzz around the film grew further when the trailer came out. That’s when fans were sure, Baahubali 2 was only going to be bigger and better! Post the release, if it’s possible the buzz around the film tripled! The film’s exemplary direction, powerful characters, compelling story, the fantastic VFX were hugely praised by fans, critics alike. Apart from finally knowing why Kattappa killed Baahubali, there was much more to the magnum opus. Apart from the revolutionary cinematic experience, the film broke records at the box office right from Day 1. It went on to become the first film to cross the Rs 1000 crore club across industries.

    Samantha – Naga Chaitanya’s wedding – Down South, Tollywood’s most loved couple – Samantha ruth Prabhu and Naga Chaitanya tied the knot in October in two weddings! After a happy, colourful sangeet, the two got married at 11;54 pm in a traditional ceremony. The Catholic ceremony took place the next day. 150 guests were invited for the wedding. It was a dream come true for Sam Chay fans who got to catch a glimpse of the magical moments from the wedding, when the photography team shared a few pics online. It was  a fairytale like wedding with couple radiating happiness. The excitement aorund the big day began right form Jan when the two got engaged in a dreamy ceremony. Their wedding was a big deal because, the on screen jesse Karthi got married for real!

    Kamal Haasan -This year has been more about his political ambitions, less about film projects. His meet up with the Delhi CM fuelled speculation further. In the later half of the year, the veteran actor went on to confirm of his politcial plunge. He was clear that he wouldn’t join any existing party as he didn’t follow any of their ideologies. He also clarified that he would have to finish off all film commitments before he took up politics. As of now the actor hasn’t taken his first step towards his political ambition. He is currently busy with wrapping Vishwaroopam 2’s post production.

    Jimmiki Kamal – After Kolaveri Di, no song has managed to witness a frenzy until this year. 2017 witnessed an obsessive craze around Velipatinde Pusthakam’s Jimmiki Kamal. The song went on to become quite the rage! In fact, everyone around the world was humming to it and grooving to it – right from Jimmy Kimmel who became a fan of the song to a group of boys who grooved to the peppy number on a popular dance show. Andto think, Mohanlal was not even it yet it went on to become the biggest chartbuster of this year. Soon after, as a thank you to all the fans for their love, Mohanlal performed to the song with the cast and made it a song to always remember! The film  so far has clocked in 55M

    1000 crore project on Mahabharata – Just when we though Baahubali 2 and 2.0  would be the most expensive project till date, came along a grand announcement that changed everything. Mohanlal is all set to star in a mega epic titled – Randamoozham which is based on the Mahabharata. The film is based on MT Vasudevan Nair’s book by the same name. Mohanlal will play Bheema as the book is being narrated form his perspective. The rest of the cast is yet to be finalised. A UAE businessman has confirmed to invest Rs 1000 crore in this project. It will release two parts. The team will begin shooting in 2018.
    2.0 release dates -This sci fi mega budget  film has been in the news because of its star cast – Rajinikanth, Akshay Kumar, and Amy jackson and its grand scale of production. It’s one of the first films to be made entirely in 3D. The film has garnered huge buzz thanks to its posters, making videos, grand audio launch. But what has proved to be a dampener is the release date being changed multiple times. Initially the film was to release in Diwali but the film got pushed to January. However, owing to pending CG work, the film has been pushed again to April 2018. Now that is raising a concern for other films that have locked in on the same release date in April.
    Mersal Box office – After Baahubali 2’s phenomenal success it was difficult to imagine success of that stature. But come Diwali 2017 and Mersal made that vision possible! Thalapathy Vijay’s second film with Atlee is the highest grossing Tamil film of all time as the movie crossed the Rs 200 crore mark at the worldwide box office. Despite controversies unfurling around it, prior to its release, post its release, the movie managed to storm the box office!
