Water shortage in
South City 2 has put residents in the lurch, in the midst of winter season.
Residents said around 3,000 homes in the area have been reeling under water shortage for the past week. They said despite having 2,400 kilolitres as storage, water runs out much sooner.
"Over the last couple of days, we realised that water was running short," said Neeraj Yadav, RWA president, South City 2. "I got frequent calls from residents saying water had run out, soon after they started their household work," he said.
Neeraj added that he raised the issue with Huda several times in the past, and also met Huda administrator Yashpal Yadav on Friday. "Huda officials keep telling us that they have been supplying the same amount of water every day. Then how come water runs out?" asked Neeraj.
A Huda official countered that they had not restrained water supply. "Why would we limit the water supply without informing residents?" the official asked. "The water supply from our end is as usual," he said.
Residents also alleged that the "tanker mafia" may be behind the water crisis, as they have seen streams of private water tankers arriving every day. They claimed that developer
Unitech may be hand in glove with the
tanker mafia.
"All of a sudden, we saw some 150 water tanks arriving at our area daily. This shows the severity of the situation," said Anand Chowdhary, a resident. "We already have two tanks for storing water. Each tank has storage capacity of 1,200 kilolitres, yet we are running out of water."
TOI called up the Unitech spokesperson who said he couldn't comment on the issue immediately as he was not familiar with it.
Meanwhile, Yashpal Yadav predicted that the water shortage may be the result of a leaking pipeline. "There are too many pipelines going through the area. Some are often damaged and end up leaking. As of now, I don't know exactly which pipeline is leaking, but I will soon get the issue checked," he said.
