Nadine Dorries launches furious attack on Brexit rebels - we should praise 'unsung heroes'

BREXIT bill rebels should "learn a lesson" from heroic pro-Remain MPs backing Theresa May to successfully leave the European Union, Tory MP Nadine Dorries said.

MPs voted 309 to 305 in favour of an amendment to the Brexit Bill which dashed Theresa May’s plans for a take-it-or-leave-it final Brexit vote, with MPs now able to suggest new terms of Britain’s EU exit.

Ms Dorries said: "I think some of the rebels could perhaps learn a lesson from some of their Remain colleagues who know the right thing to do is deliver Brexit because that was voted for on a democratic mandate.

"Can I tell you who the real heroes are in all of this? They the Conservative MPs. They are the people who are the unsung heroes, who are backing the Government, backing Theresa May and doing so because they know that is their duty to do so."

Brexit news - Nadine Dorries slapped down Tory MPs for voting against PM May

Several rebel MPs from Mrs May’s Tory party helped push through the amendment presented by former Attorney General Dominic Grieve to secure a "meaningful vote" on the terms of the UK's withdrawal bill.

Ms Dorries also took a dig at Labour for "betraying" the will of constituents by fighting Brexit.

She told BBC Sunday Politics: "The heroes are not the Labour MPs – who I think have betrayed their Northern constituencies – but it’s the Conservative MPs who believed in Remain, who campaigned for Remain during the EU referendum but who stood on a manifesto to deliver Brexit.

The defeat in the Commons came a week after the Prime Minister struck a deal on the Brexit divorce terms with EU Commission boss Jean-Claude Juncker.

Following the green light from the Commission and the European Parliament, EU leaders voted in favour of kickstarting Brexit trade talks with Brexit Secretary David Davis.

But Brussels politicians caused outrage among Leavers by stating Brexit trade talks cannot formally begin until March.

A petition, demanding Mrs May ditches the Article 50 process, sailed past the 100,000 mark on Saturday, meaning it must now be considered for debate by MPs.

It was set up by Leave voter Jack Taylor, who wrote: “The Government should walk away from the Article 50 negotiations and leave the EU immediately with no deal.

“The EU looks set to offer us a punishment deal out of spite. Why wait another 18 months when we could leave right away and fully take back control of our country, lawmaking powers and borders?”
