Inmate suffers head injury as violence rocks jail again

LUDHIANA: Another case of violence was reported inside Ludhiana Central Jail on Sunday when an inmate was thrashed by others with sharp-edged weapons over a petty issue. The injured was rushed to jail hospital from where he was referred to the civil hospital. He received stitches on his head and his condition is stated to be stable now.
The jail authorities lodged a complaint with division number 7 police station on Monday.

On Sunday afternoon, a group of inmates of barrack number 1 started arguing with an inmate of barrack number 7 and asked him not to come near their barrack. They indulged in heated arguments, which led to inmates of barrack number 1 attacking barrack number 7 undertrial Honey Kumar.

When Kumar's head started bleeding, he raised the alarm and the authorities took him to hospital.

Deputy superintendent Manjeet Singh Tiwana said, "We have identified the accused as Gurjinder Singh, Jasvir Singh, Rajiv Kumar, Naveen and Navjot Singh. A complaint against them was registered on Monday."

Tiwana added, "The injured alleged that he was attacked with sharp-edged weapons, but so far the jail authorities have not recovered any such thing."

While lodging the complaint, the jail authorities told division number 7 police station that Kumar was attacked with sharp-edged weapons.

The back-to-back clashes being reported from Ludhiana jail point to jail authorities' failure to check entry of weapons.


On October 25, two inmates indulged in a scuffle, following which one, identified as Babu, suffered an injury in his left ear and got 15 stitches. The incident occurred in the Yamuna barrack of the jail when in the evening two prisoners were having tea and one of them mistakenly dropped it on the other.


On September 12, jail's medical officer Dr Swarandeep Singh was attacked by a group of inmates with sharp-edged weapons. A judicial inquiry was marked in the case.


On March 8, three undertrials, Munish Kumar, Amandeep Singh, Rajinder Singh, and a convict, Deepak Ghai, were booked for beating up an inmate. The accused also beat up another undertrial, Vicky, who captured the incident and uploaded the video on social media. The jail authorities got to know about it after the video was uploaded.
