Ujjain: Residents ‘gheraoed’ the mayor’s office at the Ujjain Municipal Corporation (UMC)’s headquarters at Chhatrapati Shivaji Bhavan on Monday in support of their demand for compensation and rehabilitation of people affected due to the widening of the road from Imli Tiraha to KD Gate. Protesting under the patronage of Congress leaders they demanded that a settlement be made immediately.

According to leader of the opposition, Rajendra Vashishth and corporator Sapna Sankhala, the widening of Qumari Marg, Agar Road, had been undertaken by the UMC in the recent past and affected people had been compensated. However, similar steps have not been taken for those affected by the KD Gate-Imli Tiraha widening, nor had anything been planned in terms of rehabilitation.

Several houses on this route will be completely destroyed or affected. These houses mainly belong to socially and economically backward people of the society. A paltry sum is expected to be given as compensation, which may not be sufficient for these people to build or repair homes.

Vashishth said, corporator Sapna Sankhala, Maya Rajesh Trivedi, Congress leader Ravi Rai, Vivek Yadav, Ashok Bhati, Azam Shaikh, Jitendra Tilkar, will be giving a memorandum to the mayor stating and affirming their involvement in the development of these houses. This support would not be forthcoming if adequate steps are not taken.
