AUSTRALIA Post is gearing up for the biggest parcel delivery day in Australian history with tomorrow set to tip the service into record numbers.

Over 2.5 million parcels will be delivered through its network as Christmas Day draws closer.

Since early October, Australia Post has experienced unprecedented parcel volumes as consumers take advantage of pre-Christmas sales.

Australia Post Group chief operating officer Bob Black said record parcel volumes were being processed through major sorting facilities across the country, with more people than ever opting to have their Christmas gifts delivered to the door.

"We know Australians love online shopping and we will have our biggest ever parcel delivery day tomorrow, with over 2.5million parcels expected through our network," Mr Black said.

"Australians are shopping online more than ever, with an unprecedented growth rate of 15percent in the first half of 2017.

"Online shopping festivals like Click Frenzy and Black Friday have also proven to be extremely popular this year and we expect to be busy right up until Christmas."

Mr Black said this year the top categories being bought online were homewares, appliances, toys, games and fashion.

"With Christmas only eight sleeps away our posties are working hard to get everyone's Christmas presents delivered ahead of the big day," he said.

"We're also offering customers more flexibility with weekend parcel deliveries, and we're keeping post offices open longer."

Customers are urged to lodge their parcels as soon as possible for delivery before Christmas but Australia Post's range of Express Post items makes it easier for last-minute shopping.
