Mumbai: 12 killed as fire breaks out in shop

Mumbai: At least 12 employees of Bhanu Farsan shop in Makhariya Compound, Khairani Road, in Saki Naka area of Mumbai died after being trapped in a fire that broke out in the wee hours of Monday.

According to an official, the fire brigade control room received a call at around 4:17 AM. Three fire engines and four jumbo tankers were rushed to the spot. Although the fire was extinguished within ten minutes, several workers who were fast asleep at the shop when the fire broke out died.

Sources said that the fire started at the ground floor-level and the structure later collapsed. Officials sifted through the wreckage and removed 12 charred bodies.

The Disaster Management Unit of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation confirms that 12 unidentified bodies have been sent to the Rajawadi Hospital in Ghatkopar.

The Saki Naka police are now working towards identifying the deceased. A probe is on to identify the fire-safety measures undertaken by the shop owner. It is suspected that the fire started due to a short circuit.
