Shimla resident held for duping residents

MOHALI: Zirakpur police on Sunday booked a native of Himachal Pradesh, for allegedly using names of high profile people on the pretext of providing government jobs to dupe citizens. Sanjay Kumar, the accused has so far cheated more than a dozen people extorting money ranging from Rs 50,000 to one lakh.
According to the information given by the police, the imposter, who earlier ran a transport business used to locate suspended government employees from the newspapers and then approach them. He claimed to be a close aide of senior politicians from Punjab and Haryana and asked for hefty amounts in lieu of getting their jobs back.

The cops however, claimed that the accused along with his two accomplices has been on police radar and cops have been tracking his movement. The cops also informed that the accused had also used the name of chief ministers of Haryana and Punjab. Sanjay used to disappear after taking money from his victims.

Investigating officer, Satnam Singh said "The accused is in Shimla, while we are in the process of identifying the victims who have been duped by him. The arrest of the accused and his two associates will reveal crucial details about the fraud".


The cops are also trying to assess as to how the accused got access to important government offices in Punjab and Haryana to target people. Apart from targeting the suspended government officials, the accused also duped innocent youth, luring them on the pretext of providing government jobs allegedly using his contacts in the government.


During investigation cops learnt that Sanjay lives in Shimla along with his wife. He was present in the area when he was arrested. The accused man had also changed his named to Narendra Kumar.


An FIR has been lodged under section 420 (cheating and dishonesty and 120 B(criminal conspiracy) of Indian Penal code while further investigations in the case are underway.
