In a glaring example of the easy availability of firearms and the rapidly spreading gun culture in Bhubaneswar, five youths of Rental Colony and Nayapalli were detained by police for trying to terrorise a rival group at gunpoint at Baramunda in the city.

Sources said two groups of students on Saturday had played a cricket match at Rental Colony. However, due to some reason there was a brawl between them.

On Sunday, one group went to the Baramunda area and in retaliation tried to assault the rival group by brandishing a Mouser. But the local people managed to overpower and snatch the gun from them. Later, the police arrived at the spot and took them into custody.

“Probe till now has revealed that a fight between two groups during a cricket match held yesterday led to today’s incident,” said city DCP Satyabrata Bhoi.

The incident has sent shockwaves among the residents, who demanded the police to investigate how the teenagers managed to get hold of such a sophisticated weapon.
