Keegan Brown stunned world number 11 James Wade in the first round of the William Hill World Championship at Alexandra Palace.
Brown, a 25-year-old from the Isle of Wight, held on for a 3-2 victory against the eight-time major winner.
Brown took the first set but Wade made a classy 110 checkout in the third leg before taking the second.
Former world junior champion Brown won the third with the throw but saw his second dart knock his first off the board in the opening leg of the deciding set.
Undeterred, Brown responded with a 180 to hold before breaking an out-of-sorts Wade to reach the second round.
"I've played well in the last six months to get to this stage," Brown told Sky Sports Main Event. "I relaxed and got the job done.
"I know just to relax and enjoy the moment, and in front of this brilliant crowd who wouldn't?"
There was another shock in the evening session as eighth seed Dave Chisnall crashed to a straight-sets defeat against Holland's Vincent van der Voort.
The 41-year-old Dutchman almost retired earlier this year due to back problems, but registered six 180s to blow away England's Chisnall.
Ian White avoided a hat-trick of upsets as the 17th seed overcame New Zealand qualifier Cody Harris 3-1.
Earlier in the day Australia's Kyle Anderson beat England's Peter Jacques 3-1, Alan Norris overcame Finland's Kim Viljanen 3-0 and Jamie Lewis won an all-Welsh encounter with Jonny Clayton by the same margin.
