While Joe’s showdance came under fire from viewers, it didn’t scupper his chance of being crowned the 15th champion of Strictly Come Dancing. 

Perhaps his Glitterball glory came down to the Cinderella-inspired moment, which saw Katya’s drab grey rags wash away into a aquamarine blue gown.

Viewers applauded the makeover in their droves on Twitter, with many calling it the highlight of the entire night; and now designer Vicky Gill has revealed exactly how she made the magic happen. 

“The section that was up, with the rags on, housed all of the fringe and sequins for the final dress, so it was still a bit bulky but because of the constant movement of the rags you couldn’t see,” Gill explained. 

“It’s secured at the shoulder with elastic and Velcro, but it can’t be too much Velcro because otherwise it really sticks and you don’t get that sort of pop release.”

She added to The Sun: “When she released it, she had to manually push the material down. So what was up and was over her bustline from her hip, then became the skirt and all the fringing and everything else fell out.”

While all four judges - Shirley Ballas, Craig Revel Horwood, Bruno Tonioli and Darcey Bussell - were delighted by Joe’s triumph, Len Goodman has suggested the title should have gone to Alexandra Burke. 

Appearing on today’s This Morning, the former Strictly Come Dancing head-honcho admitted to hosts Ruth Langsford and Eamonn Holmes that Joe wasn’t the best of the bunch during Saturday’s live final. 

“I thought the final was great I enjoyed it very much,” he shared. “I enjoyed a balance, I thought Alexandra was the best dancer but Joe had the best journey.”
