Senior officers of Hassan district administration, journalists and environmentalists came together under the banner of Hasirubhoomi Trust to clean up the surroundings of Hunasinakere in the city on Sunday.

The water in Hunasinakere tank, spread across 300 acres, has been polluted in recent days. The tank has become a dumping yard for municipal and construction waste. Many localities have connected their underground drainage to the tank.

For many years, the tank has attracted hundreds of birds from distant places. However, in recent days, the number of birds visiting the tank has reduced owing to pollution. Hasirubhoomi Trust organised the clean-up programme on Sunday to pressurise elected representatives and the district administration to clean the tank.

More than 100 volunteers joined hands on the day. K.M. Janaki; Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer; Assistant Commissioner H.L. Nagaraj, who is also honorary president of the trust; H.S. Prakash, MLA; journalists R.P. Venkateshamurthy, Leelavathi; Rupa Hassan, writer; B.S. Desai, artist; Trust secretary S.S. Pasha and others participated.

Mr. Prakash said the Department of Minor Irrigation would take up cleaning of the tank soon. “The fencing work has been completed. The department would soon take up clearing the filth and beautifying the surroundings so that the place attracts more visitors,” he said.
