Students’ protest forces TNAU to roll back hike in arrear fee

Coimbatore: Following a three-hour protest by students on Monday, the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) has decided to roll back the raise in arrear examination fee.

More than 300 students held a sit-in protest near the gates of the campus against the university administration. Speaking to TOI, one of the students said, "About a month ago, we came to know that the university had hiked the fee for arrear exam from Rs 200 to Rs 1,000 for the first attempt. The fee for the second attempt was raised to Rs 2,000 and for the third attempt Rs 3,000."

Around 1pm, the dean of agriculture, S Mahimairaja, held talks with the students and decided to roll back the administration's decision of hiking the fee. Justifying the reason for hiking the fee, Mahimairaja said, "Many were registering for the exam and not appearing for it." He said most students were not informing their parents and were able to manage the meagre Rs 200 easily from their pocket money. "If they paid a significant sum as an exam fee they would take the exam seriously,"he said.

On the other hand, students said most of them were from poor background and the huge sum for exams would be a burden for their parents.tnn
