SAMASTIPUR: A girl student tried to immolate herself on the Samastipur collectorate premises on Sunday to protest police inaction against a coaching institute owner who, she alleged, had sexually exploited her. The institute is in Kashipur locality of the town.

The girl, who belongs to Saran district, came in contact with the institute owner through phone calls. On his advice, she came to Samastipur about five months back and allegedly married him. After some time, he started misbehaving and threw her out of his house. She approached the police, which failed to take any action against her tormentor, she alleged.

The girl doused herself with kerosene and was about to set herself afire, but the policemen and a magistrate on duty there prevented her from doing so. She was later taken to the Sadar hospital.

Mahila police station SHO Neelima Kumari said an FIR has been lodged against one Krishna Kant Jha on the written complaint of the girl about her sexual exploitation. She has been medically examined, the SHO said and added the girl's statement would be recorded under Section 164 of the CrPC soon.
