Despite claims of crackdown on power theft, the financial losses of Uttar Pradesh’s power distribution utilities rose by almost 1,000 times in the past 16 years — from Rs 77 crore in 2000-01 to around Rs 72,000 crore in 2016-17. This was disclosed on Friday by UP energy minister Srikant Sharma in response to a question by BSP’s deputy leader in the assembly, Uma Shankar Singh.
According to the government’s submission in assembly, the financial losses kept accumulating over a period of time since 2000-01 when the UP Electricity Boardwas divided into three wings — UP Power Generation Corporation Ltd, UP Transmission Corporation Ltd and UP Power Corporation Ltd.
Records submitted by the state government show that the financial losses of UPPCL rose from Rs 77.47 crore in 2000-01 to more than Rs 5,000 crore by 2005-06. Between 2006 and 2007, when state assembly elections were round the corner, UPPCL incurred a loss of Rs 3,775.75 crore. Read More…
