She asks the chief engineer of the PWD to take up dredging of canal

Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi on Sunday visited the Tirubuvanai Assembly constituency to address several issues after the local MLA B. Kobiga of the All India N.R. Congress made a formal complaint to her.

In an official release, Ms. Bedi said the MLA had requested her to address the issues of dredging of Thiruvandarkoil, fencing and cleaning of the Tirubuvanai lake, irregularities in the allotment of tenements at Kalitheerthalkuppam, lack of basic amenities at Saniyasikuppam school and lack of bus facility at Andiyarpalayam.

The release said the chief engineer of the Public Works Department had said that tenders would soon be floated to clean the Thiruvandarkoil lake. The work would be completed by January end.

Ms. Bedi had requested the MLA to form a people’s committee to involve the local community in the cleaning up exercise. After the lake was dredged, a massive tree plantation exercise would be taken along the lake bund. The Lt. Governor reviewed the construction of public toilets in the locality.

Dredging work

Ms. Bedi directed the chief engineer to coordinate with his counterpart in Tamil Nadu to dredge the channel that diverts water from Pennaiyar to Thirubuvanai lake.

The channel was found to be choked with silt, the release said.

The Director of Local Administration Department would inquire into the irregularities in the allotment of tenements constructed by the Welfare Department at Kalitheerthalkuppam.

A non-governmental organisation would be roped in to provide basic amenities, including toilets and repair of tables, in the school at Sanniyasikuppam, the release added.
