9 die in stampede at Mohiuddin’s kulkhwani

Nine persons died and about 40 others were injured in a stampede at the kulkhwani of former Chittagong mayor Mohiuddin Chowdhury this afternoon.

Chittagong Medical College Hospital police camp’s In-Charge Zohirul Islam confirmed our local staff correspondent of the development and said about 12 others were attending treatment.

The incident took place at Rima Community Centre in Chittagong city’s Jamal Khan area, one of the 11 places where the kulkhwani was arranged and specially organised for the Hindu community.

A duty officer of the hospital’s police camp, Mohammad Hamid, told The Daily Star that all the dead were men who died while scurrying into the community centre.

Identities of the deceased could not be ascertained immediately. Further details were awaited.
