Associate Senior University Lecturer in Synchrotron Radiation Instrumentation : Lund, Sweden

The work tasks are primarily research as well as teaching on basic and graduate levels. Research will comprise at least 80 % of the time. The proportion between teaching and research can change over time and other duties can be included.

The main research task is to lead, coordinate and develop novel synchrotron-based methods and instruments that use the unique properties of the MAX IV synchrotron radiation source. The research should be primarily of an experimental nature, but can be complemented by theoretical modelling either through the applicant’s own efforts or in collaboration with other research groups. The specific area of developments is open, but could for example be in imaging, spectroscopy, scattering, dynamics or a combination of these. It must be directly and strongly related to present or envisioned instruments at MAX IV. The collaboration with researchers at other synchrotron sources worldwide will be an important asset. Within the above specified area the candidate is expected to develop her/his own independent research programme and to cooperate with other research leaders and researchers at the division, department, faculty, Lund University at large, MAX IV and other universities and research institutes. The position is in instrumental development and should thus not be too narrowly coupled to a specific type of material system or scientific question addressed with the methods employed. There should be an explicit interest in establishing interdisciplinary collaborations with other researchers and strengthening the developments around MAX IV.

The successful candidate is expected to teach and develop courses on basic and advanced level in areas of relevance to the division's research. The extent of teaching at the basic or advanced level corresponds to 10-20% of the position. Recruitment and supervision of bachelor’s and master’s students as well as one or more doctoral students is part of the expected teaching duties. Experience shows that supervision of 2-3 students in total at a time is to be expected.

The candidate is expected to successfully apply for external research funding.

Type of employment: Limit of tenure, 4 years, with the opportunity to promotion to senior lecturer.

Eligibility
The candidate shall hold a doctorate in physics, chemistry, technical physics, materials science or a related field (or a qualification equivalent to a doctorate). Further, the candidate shall have a well-documented research background within development of synchrotron-based techniques. Priority shall be given to candidates who have completed their degree at least two and no more than seven years before the last date for application.

Very good skills in English, both written and spoken, is a requirement for the position.

For academic staff at Lund University the general qualification requirements are to be suited to and having the general ability required to complete the duties of the post well.

Basis of Assessment
The main criteria for the position are pedagogic and scientific skills, with an emphasis on scientific skills.

The candidate will be judged by the following criteria:

- The candidate must demonstrate significant experience with the development of novel experimental methods in synchrotron science, development of synchrotron beamlines and/or development of equipment used at such beamlines.

- The research and development proposed by the candidate must be clearly relevant to the present or future developments at the MAX IV facility taking the special properties of the MAX IV light sources into consideration.

- The candidate must have experience in postdoctoral research.

- The candidate must have the ability to collaborate with other researchers at Lund University and elsewhere, be open and have the ability to work across the disciplinary borders while maintaining a strong, creative drive in their own research. We expect our coworkers to treat each other and our students with respect. This attitude is important both at the university and in our interactions with external partners.

- Demonstrated development of research collaborations with other groups using the techniques developed/implemented by the applicant is an important merit.

- The candidates demonstrated independence in his/her work and research ambitions after PhD studies is a merit.

- The candidates ability and interest in employing his/her instrumentation in different scientific sub-diciplines is an important merit.

- Documented development of research collaboration with theoreticians and/or experts on complementary instrumentation and methods is an advantage.

- The candidates teaching documented experience and interest in teaching at both undergraduate and Master’s/advanced level courses is a merit.

-The candidates demonstrated ability to obtain national or international external funding grants in competition is a merit.

- In the assessment the attached research plan (according to the Academic qualifications portfolio) will be of considerable weight.

- When making the appointment, consideration will be given to the Lund University Appointment Rules.

Promotion
An associate senior lecturer is to be promoted, on application, to employment as a senior lecturer on an indefinite-term contract if he or she has the qualifications required for the post and is assessed to be suitable in accordance with the qualification requirements and assessment criteria established by the Faculty of Science. An associate senior lecturer may only apply for promotion once.

The Division of Synchrotron Radiation Physics (www.sljus.lu.se) is a part of the Department of Physics and has more than 40 employees. The focus of the research is experimental studies of electronic, structural and chemical properties of materials, accelerators for synchrotron radiation and instruments and methods for synchrotron radiation. At the Division we use and develop a wide range of synchrotron- and lab-based techniques, such as X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy/imaging and X-ray diffraction/imaging. We also host one of Sweden's largest facilities for scanning probe microscopy. We are additionally engaged in the development of the MAX IV Laboratory in the fields of beamlines, experimental stations, techniques for synchrotron radiation and the accelerator systems.

The MAX IV (www.maxiv.lu.se/) is a national large-scale research laboratory hosted by Lund University and situated within biking distance from the Department of Physics. It provide scientists from Sweden and the rest of the world with instruments for research in areas such as materials science, structural biology, chemistry and nanotechnology.
