Newly published tie-in books for Star Wars: The Last Jedi reveal why Benicio Del Toro's character is nicknamed "DJ." The shady character is a "slicer" (hacker) enlisted by Finn and Rose in Canto Bight.
The Star Wars The Last Jedi The Visual Dictionary reveals "DJ" aren't his initials but actually stands for "Don't Join." Indeed, his cap bears a tin plate with the motto "don't join" stamped on it.
DJ is a cynical, opportunistic survivor who sees society as imbalanced in favor of the wealthy and holds little regard for the First Order, the Resistance, or the New Republic. "He thinks larger causes are for fools, since society is just a machine looking to turn everyone into a cog," according to the book.
While a galaxy far, far away is full of con artists out to hustle people, "DJ insists he's the only one honest enough to openly acknowledge what he wants, and just how far he'll go to get it."
Another new tie-in book, The Art of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, also reveals DJ's name and motto were inspired by the slogan on this provocative 1978 promotional poster for the album "Armed Forces" by English punk/new wave musicians Elvis Costello and the Attractions. "I always loved that phrase," said Last Jedi writer-director Rian Johnson.
