Flights heading out of the Bay Area to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport were cancelled Sunday afternoon as the Atlanta airport dealt with a power outage that left many fliers in the dark.

About 13 flights out of San Francisco International Airport were affected Sunday, with airline carriers United, Southwest and Delta forced to cancel its Atlanta flights due to the ground stop issued at Hartsfield.

Delta's flights were affected the most, with seven of its flights out of SFO cancelled; Atlanta serves as the headquarters and hub for Delta.

"The ground stop they've got at Hartsfield is going to be lasting into the evening for sure, is what they're telling me at Delta," said San Francisco International Airport Duty Manager Jeff Figone.

"It's looking like just the flights directly to Atlanta (are impacted), because I think they re-routed flights to go around," Figone continued. "It's not a super big impact at this point, but if you're going to Atlanta, it's not going to be fun this evening."

Two inbound Delta flights to San Jose Airport from Hartsfield were also cancelled Sunday, San Jose Airport spokesman Jon Vaden confirmed. Another departing Delta flight to Atlanta from San Jose was also cancelled.

Calls to Oakland International Airport were not immediately returned.

Power had been out at Hartsfield-Jackson since about 1 p.m. EST. All flights coming into and going out of the world's busiest airport were halted. By 7:45 p.m., the airport reported that one concourse had regained power.

Georgia Power says that it expects power to be restored at Hartsfield-Jackson by midnight.

In a news release Sunday evening, the utility said the "the issue may have involved a fire which caused extensive damage in a Georgia Power underground electrical facility." The cause of the fire was not known, the statement says, but it impacted underground facilities and substations serving the airport.

Anyone flying out of the Bay Area is encouraged to check with their carrier on the status of their flight, as it's currently unclear whether flights to Atlanta will continue to be impacted Monday morning.
