A Brazilian man was arraigned before the courts this morning, charged with possession of drugs.

31-year-old Eduardo Casucci Vieira appeared before magistrate Josette Demicoli after being found in possession of five ecstasy pills and a small amount of cannabis.

The man pleaded guilty to the charges brought against him. The magistrate asked the accused to confirm his plea as the charges could lead to effective jail time. Vieira, who was assisted by a translator, confirmed his guilty plea.

The prosecution, led by inspector Trevor Micallef, noted that the man cooperated with the police. He also explained that the man is living in Malta as he is a student until June next year. The man, who held a small picture of a saint throughout the whole session, was given on conditional discharge for a period of three years.

Legal aid Christopher Chircop appeared for the accused.
