The largest airport in Germany was forced to cancel the flights due to snowfall, affecting thousands of passengers.

Flights to Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Vienna, Dublin and Warsaw are thought to be affected.

However, it is hoped that the weather will improve later in the day, meaning flights are able to continue.

Flights to Frankfurt from the US were also affected by a power outage at Atlanta Airport.

Frankfurt Airport tweeted that their “winter service guys are on duty in action until the last snowflake has been finally cleared,” with a video showing the ground crew working to remove the snow from the tarmac.

Two hours ago, they wrote they have completed “35 deicings” as they fought to battle the bad weather.

They have issued a statement for passengers travelling: “Due to the weather conditions, flight disruptions and cancellations may occur at Frankfurt Airport in the morning of December 18.

“Please check the status of your flight before travelling to the airport.”

Passengers at Hatfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta also suffered problems, after they were left in the dark affecting flights, restaurants and the majority of the airport.

As one of the busiest airports in the world, many reported huge delays boarding flights as well as having to pay cash at food establishments.

Passenger Heather Kerwin told CNN: "It was completely pitch black.

"There were a few emergency lights on but it was really dark -- felt totally apocalyptic. I decided to get the hell out of there.”

The UK was badly hit by a huge influx of snow earlier this month causing British Airways to cancel over 100 flights at Heathrow Airport.

Approximately 50,000 passengers were stranded, with the first flights of the day delayed by as much as four hours.

This caused issues for the flight schedule for the rest of the day, with many being cancelled altogether or extremely late to arrive.

Both long-haul and short-haul flights were affected, with frustrated passengers taking to Twitter to complain.
