The Finn secured his one and only World Drivers’ Championship with the Italian constructors way back in 2007.

He’s since finished the season in the top three of the F1 standings just twice, coming third in 2008 and 2012.

Raikkonen ended a nine-year wait for a pole position this term, impressing in qualifying at the Monaco Grand Prix.

He failed to convert that into a win though, while Ferrari team-mate Sebastian Vettel secured five race victories in 2017 by comparison.

Raikkonen has now admitted he’s still competing in F1 to have an impact in the title race and secure another championship.

Obviously I am here to try to win races and win championships, so it is far from ideal

Ferrari driver Kimi Raikkonen opens up

"Obviously I am here to try to win races and win championships, so it is far from ideal," he said.

"But this is how it turned out to be. I can live with it, but it is not why I am here.

"We started pretty poorly at the beginning of the year, not really where we should have been.

"It has been better since then but then we had too many DNF's and never really recovered from there.

"Not the greatest start to the year but that is how it went."

Raikkonen outlined what he needs to do to get himself back in the F1 title race reckoning.

"I think it is question of many things," he said.

"If it will be easy everybody could win. But it is a lot of things. Small things.

"It has been very close with quite a few cars over the races, and it is small things that count over the race weekends.

"We need to be faster, more often, and put ourselves in a position and then hopefully some things will go a bit in our direction."
