Antoine Griezmann apologized Sunday if he “hurt” anyone with a costume he recently wore for a party. In what he described as a “tribute” to the Harlem Globetrotters, the forward for Atletico Madrid and the France’s national team wore a basketball uniform — while in full-body blackface with an Afro wig.

Griezmann posted the image to social media before taking it down, and he reportedly responded to online criticism by saying, “Calm down guys, I’m a fan of the Harlem globetrotters and the good times . . . it’s a tribute.”

The 26-year-old subsequently posted an apology. “I recognize that was clumsy on my part,” he said. “If I hurt some people I am sorry.”

Griezmann played for France in the 2014 World Cup, was the top scorer at the UEFA Euro 2016 tournament and finished third that year in voting for the Ballon d’Or, FIFA’s player of the year award. He is rumored to be a target for acquisition of top clubs such as Barcelona and Manchester United, but it remains to be seen how those organizations, not to mention Atletico, react to the accusations of racism that Griezmann earned on Sunday.
