MO FARAH – Britain’s most successful distance runner – won Sports Personality of the Year last night. How much is the Olympic champion worth?

Farah – who was at home looking after his sick son during the announcement – appeared via video link to accept his win.

The champion, who claimed his third consecutive world 10,00 metres title in August, was surprised at his win.

He said: ’”I didn't see this coming, I thought I wasn't going to win it.

“You look at this year and Jonnie Peacock, Anthony Joshua, Lewis Hamilton, it's been incredible. When you see that list and put yourself in there, you think, 'I might finish top three, maybe.”

He was not the only one surprised to win the title, with bookmakers putting his odds at 50-1, with Anthony Joshua being the favourite.

Farah added: “It means everything to me. I owe it to my country and I know I get the cheers on the track. It encourages me every day to keep grafting.”

Farah, born in Mogadishu, Somalia, is the most successful British Olympic track athlete in modern history, having bagged four gold medals.

The GB champion retired from track on August 24, and will now draw his focus to marathons.
