Bar America
After closing a month for upgrades, the legendary Bar America reopened in April with a new complexion and management. Brian Correa, 31, grandson of bar founder Martin Ramirez, runs the institution. Most noticeably, the back bar has been redone so that it's farther back. The vintage beer memorabilia and dusty trinkets are gone. Some booths remain. Some stool-high seating has been introduced. Pool tables remain. The bathrooms are cleaner. And the bar has added three TVs for Spurs watching.

Woodrow's, which opened in March in the Medical Center in what used to be Fast Eddie's, is likely the only bar in San Antonio that offers turtle racing. The rules are pretty simple: The turtle that leaves the mat first wins. This might be the perfect day for hard-core shoppers with good taste and a good appetite: Shop til you are about to drop at the Shops at La Cantera, hit “Social Hour” at Bar 79 in Perry's Steakhouse & Grill, and have a light dinner off the bar menu, or order off the dinner menu and go whole hog. Brick House Tavern + Tap
It's hard to pigeonhole this place. It's a restaurant with a full menu, with favorites such as the drunken pork chops ($15.50), the gun show burger (topped with a fried egg, $9.50), chicken & waffles ($13), fish & chips ($11.50), salads and a long list of sandwiches. Lots of choices and good ones, including those addicting bacon-topped deviled eggs ($5 for six) on the appetizer menu. The options fill a full page. But here's the tricky part. The booze options fill two. With 82 choices of beer, 24 draft taps, a good assortment of cocktails and wine, you can get your party on here. Or ask for the early, early shift at work some day so you can swing by happy hour on Monday through Thursday from 3 to 6 p.m.

Box 903: Sports bar
It's a sport bar. It's a speakeasy. A North Side spot that's housed a neighborhood bar for 15 years reopened in June with a new concept (or two). The dark, black-and-gray décor pays tribute to secret Prohibition-era bars, with photos of Al Capone and quotes from the Chicago gangster on the walls. You might not notice them at first because of the five 14-foot projection TVs that fill two walls; each has its own “private box,” a railed-off seating area for eight to 10.

The young and the restless wasted no time in populating this big bar that opened April 1 with an energetic, noisy, thirsty, hungry crowd. A patio catches the sunset, and an outdoor fireplace was going on one of the cooler nights we visited. Drinks, ’cue and golf: At Bushwood C.C., you’ll get everything and like it
Snapshot: Bushwood C.C. isn’t so much a bar as it is a thriving neighborhood entertainment complex,. Between the booze, barbecue and golf balls hit on the driving range, each visit can produce random zaniness akin to “Caddyshack,” the movie that inspired the bar’s name. The outdoor patio is spacious and relaxing, with plenty of picnic tables and shade, but customers can remain inside for a lively experience as the evening hours creep in.
Who goes there: Golfers, sports and outdoor enthusiasts (McAllister Park is next door), twentysomethings and the after-work happy hour crowd keep things busy from open to close.
RELATED: Off the clock, regulars unwind at Marty's Cocktails
Behind the bar: Nothing fancy, and that’s OK. Pretty much all of the liquor options are affordable shots and well drinks priced from $2.75 to $4. A lot of whiskey is poured out of the bar. The bottled and tap beer options are priced the same. Happy hour runs 2 to 7 p.m. with daily specials that always include liquor and beer offerings for less than $3. Get a bucket of six domestic beers for less than $20 to take with you on the range.
Munchies: There’s popcorn in the bar, but that’s nothing compared to the barbecue plates, sandwiches and overflowing baked potatoes served a few feet away at Bushwood BBQ from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. most days.
Soundtrack: The bar is one of an ever-growing list of establishments to go the online tunes route, with music that can be purchased via your smart phone or the old-school way, by inserting money into the machine.
RELATED: Texas 46 BBQ coming to Spring Branch area
More Information
Bushwood C.C.
Address: 13800 Jones-Maltsberger Road
Hours: 2 p.m.-2 a.m. Mondays-Saturdays; 2 p.m.-midnight Sundays.
Phone: 210-496-9000
Facebook:Bushwoods
Cost/noise: Low/low
Fun and games: It’s all about the golf here. Customers can grab a $5 bucket of balls and hit on the range until 11:30 p.m., watch from the patio or play arcade golf on the Golden Tee machine. There are plenty of sports on TV, too, with one or two sets tuned into the Golf Channel. There also are two dart machines and a pool table, and one of the TVs is dedicated to TapTV trivia.
The skinny: The Bushwood scene is a bare-bones (and affordable) version of TopGolf, sans the neon lights and loungey atmosphere, and it’s probably more of a San Antonio secret than it should be. The cozy bar, barbecue and golf entities are all owned by separate parties, but they work together to provide an experience that can turn your happy hour into an all-afternoon or evening event.
