OXNARD, Calif. — They gathered on a windy overpass, a handful of grateful local residents and several crews of firefighters, all to honor a hero Sunday on his last journey home.

The scene was played out on countless overpasses as a procession, led by a contigent of fire helicopters, wound through five counties to take the remains of Cal Fire Engineer Cory Iverson home to the San Diego area.

Iverson, 32, married with a 2-year-old daughter and a baby on the way, died from burns and smoke inhalation while battling the Thomas fire near Fillmore, Calif. The Thomas fire hasn't let up, destroying more than 1,000 homes and blackening 270,000 acres to become the third-largest in state history.

The procession gave local residents a chance to turn out to show their gratitude for the two-week effort to quell the Thomas fire, which continued to rage Sunday farther north in Santa Barbara. And it gave firefighters, many of whom had come hundreds of miles to battle the conflagration, a chance to gather together briefly to pay homage to one of their own on a day when winds had abated at the fire's front, now nearly 40 miles away.

At the Del Norte Boulevard crossing over U.S. Route 101, not far from where the procession began in Ventura, all stood quietly. Fire trucks from federal installations in Ventura County as well as northern California were lined up across the bridge. Firefighters saluted as the procession passed.

The Ventura County residents said they not only wanted to pay tribute to Iverson, but all the firefighters who sacrificed on their behalf during the nearly two-week ordeal.

"I just felt it was necessary to show our respect," said Alana Wolters of Santa Paula, who brought daughter Logan, 4, and son Walker, 6, along to the overpass.

With Logan bundled under a blanket, Wolters teared up as she talked about Iversen's sacrifice and the fire they watched unfold out their windows. She said her kids are still dealing with the events, at one point asking whether the fire would come to their home.

"It's just been really emotional," she said.

For Elaine Hughes Connelly of Oxnard, the fire was personal.

Her son is a firefighter for Cal Fire, a nickname for California's Department of Forest and Fire Protection, and he had friends who knew Iverson. She said her son wanted her there to represent his "fire family." Iverson's death underscored the dangers of the fire profession.

"He could have been any of our sons, any of our husbands," Connelly said.

Some locals walked the line shaking firefighters hands and thanking them. Jerry Gulsvig of Oxnard, who came with wife Nancy, held a large American flag.

"We want to show our respect for all the firemen have traveled long distances and the sacrifices they have made," he said. He said he wanted to "support his family and the brotherhood."
