Hope dims for 4 missing soldiers in Kashmir, search continues

SRINAGAR: The search and rescue operation continued from last over a week to trace four soldiers, who went missing in two separate incidents following heavy snowfall in north Kashmir, even though little hope is left of their survival.
Meanwhile, body of one of the two soldiers, who went missing after slipping from a mountain following heavy snowfall at Nowgam sector in frontier Kashmir district of Kupwara on December 11, was recovered on Sunday.
Three troopers went missing after a snow avalanche hit a forward post of Army in Gurez sector in north Kashmir district of Bandipora on December 12.
Defence Ministry spokesperson said on Monday that search and rescue operation continued in Nowgam sector and Gurez sector to trace the missing soldiers.
One of soldier, whose body was recovered yesterday, has been identified as Sepoy Koushal Singh, who was given a befitting tribute during a wreath laying ceremony at Badami Bagh Cantonment here on Sunday.
Search operation continued to trace the three soldiers, who went missing after a snow avalanche hit Army’s Mani Post at Bagtoo in Gurez sector on December 12.
“There was very less chance of their survival after remaining buried under several feet snow for the seventh day today,” defence sources added.
A porter, working with Army, slipped to death from a mountain top due to slippery conditions following fresh snowfall in border town of Gurez on December 11.
In January this year, 14 soldiers were killed in two snow avalanches which hit an Army post and patrol party in Gurez sector. (AGENCIES)
