HYDERABAD: In perhaps his first letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi after taking charge as Congress president, Rahul Gandhi on Sunday sought a special assistance package for Ockhi-hit Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

“In this time of grief and pain, it is but appropriate that you will be visiting the affected regions in the coming days,” he said in his letter. “I visited some of the areas in Kerala and Tamil Nadu on the 14th of December, 2017.

I felt first hand the immense pain and grief that this tragedy has brought to our people... In these challenging times, our fishermen deserve a helping hand from our government.” He urged Modi to take steps to ensure rehabilitation of the fishermen while focusing on aspects like housing, basic health services and quality education for their children.
