Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department copes with deputy’s tragedy

An outpouring of support for Deputy Bryan Lukens and his family continues to flood the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department in the aftermath of the early Wednesday morning fire at their Schwenksville home that claimed the lives of his sons, 11-year-old Bryan Lukens Jr. and 6-year-old Parker Lukens.

Support for Schwenksville fire victims draws attention across country

When a community comes together to show kindness and support, it can have effects that spread far beyond the people inside it. The support shown to the family of Montgomery County Sheriff’s Deputy Bryan Lukens after a devastating fire that destroyed their home and took the lives of two children has proven that to be true.

Residents get Route 322 update

Since its opening in 1954, the stretch of Route 322 that runs through Delaware County has been a vital piece of highway that connects Lake Erie in Cleveland, Ohio, to the casinos of Atlantic City, offering a lakes-to-sea commute that stretches clear across Pennsylvania. Running 494 miles, the east-west Route 322 remains one of the main thoroughfares through Delaware County, connecting Route 1 to I-95, ferrying commuters who travel from Chester County and west to the airport, Philadelphia and shore locations.

Wreathes placed at Paoli Battlefield

On a cold snow-covered day that felt like Washington’s winter at Valley Forge, 53 wreaths from Wreaths Across America were placed at the Paoli Battlefield Memorial Grounds. The nonprofit Wreathes Across America brings evergreens to more than 1,200 veterans’ cemeteries, including Arlington National Cemetery every December. This is the first time they have been placed at Paoli Battlefield.

Eagles hoping not to miss a beat with Nick Foles under center

Dick Vermeil led the Eagles to a Super Bowl in 1980, but he needed Hall of Fame quarterback Kurt Warner to win one in 1999 with the St. Louis Rams. While Nick Foles is no Carson Wentz, the latter out with a torn ACL, Vermeil thinks the Eagles have a shot to win it all because of the coaching job done by Doug Pederson and his staff. No NFL head coach has overcome more adversity this season than Pederson, one win from locking up at least the No. 2 seed and a playoff bye when the Eagles oppose the free-falling Giants Sunday at MetLife Stadium (1 p.m., FOX29, WIP 94.1-FM).

Parent: Flyers fans cheer Hitchcock’s loss, but an encore is called for

Fred “The Fog” Shero was certainly a character. And there were those two Stanley Cup championships under his watch to set his name in gold at the top of the Flyers’ long list of head coaches. Big bear Pat Quinn was naturally skilled at gently motivating players under his tutelage. Terry Murray was a long-time fixture around the Flyers who had success here and elsewhere. What neither did was win a Cup like Shero, though they came very close and were fired too soon afterward for their efforts.

A joyous occasion deserves a sweet, decadent treat

Reminding you of pecan pie, this recipe is far and above better flavored, joyous to the occasion and did I mention it has chocolate in it as well? One look at the crispy, toasted and decadent topping that literally crackles as you cut it, and it will soon become a favorite this Christmas. There really isn’t anything one can do about the sweetness of this pie. If it wasn’t for the sweetness, it would simply be inedible. But by substituting apple jelly for the classic corn syrup, generally found in pies such as this, at least we are able to have taste other than sugar. I think you will agree that apple jelly makes this a pie with flavor that supersedes any other nut pie commonly enjoyed during this festive time of year.
