
‘Register every marriage to protect minors’

HYDERABAD: Addressing a consultation for the prevention of child marriage organised in the city on Saturday, Telangana State Commission for Women (TSCW) Chairman Tripurana Venkataratnam asserted that the eradication of the practice is a collective social responsibility. In the presence of Acting Chief Justice of Hyderabad High Court, Ramesh Ranganathan and Justice V Ramasubramanian, chairperson, Legal Services Authority, it was recommended that every marriage should be registered. If the Compulsory Registration of Marriage Act 2005 is implemented, it will act as a deterrence for child marriages, pointed out experts. The Child Development Project Officer should be held accountable.
Justice Ranganathan stressed that awareness among stakeholders is required to curb social evils. Legal cognizance is necessary among officials to helps citizens better with relief, he said. While Justice Ramasubramanian pointed the loopholes of Prohibition of Child Marriages Act, Venkataratnam lamented that many laws which seem perfect on paper but not implemented properly.
