DU officials assault journalist

A group of staff at Dhaka University (DU) registrar building allegedly assaulted a campus reporter on Sunday morning.

Kabirul Islam Kanon, reporter of the Daily Ittefaq, also a third year student of mass communication and journalism department was attacked by a group of staff of the registrar building while he was filming the scenario of empty administrative rooms during office hour.

They (staff) snatched the mobile phone from him and hurled abusive words claiming themselves as former activists of ruling Awami League’s student front Chhatra League, Kabir said.

The attackers were section officer Nizam Uddin, Ahsanul Kabir and the registrar's personal secretary Sheikh Giyas Uddin.

Eyewitnesses said, Giyas Uddin claimed himself as a former Chhatra League leader and threaten Kabir not to make any story against them.

Kabir filed a written complaint to the DU Vice Chancellor Professor Md. Akhtaruzzaman demanding punishment of the attackers.

Terming the incident as ‘unfortunate’, Akhtaruzzaman said stern action will be taken against the alleged officials.

Meanwhile, Dhaka University Journalists’ Association (DUJA) issued a statement over the issue demanding exemplary punishment for the persons responsible for attack on the reporter.
