Five quick observations from the Titans' 25-23 loss to the 49ers on Sunday at Levi's Stadium:
Jimmy Garoppolo carves up Titans secondary
Niners quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo led a game-winning field goal drive after the Titans took the lead with 1:07 seconds to play.
Robbie Gould hit from 45 yards as time expired, sending the Titans to a second consecutive defeat. The Niners went 48 yards in seven plays and 1:07. Gould hit six field goals. The Niners (4-10) are on a three-game winning streak.
Garoppolo led the 49ers to scores on their first four drives of the game, as well as field goals to trim the deficit to 20-19 with 8.5 minutes to play, and to give the Niners a 22-20 lead with 3:08 remaining.
Garoppolo’s performance also included leading the Niners on a 17-play, 85-yard touchdown drive that chewed more than 8.5 minutes off the clock and provided the hosts with a 13-3 lead late in the second quarter. Garrett Celek caught the 5-yard scoring pass.
At that point, the Niners had outgained the Titans 182 yards to 44 and had a 14-3 lead in first downs.
Titans rally, take first lead in fourth quarter
Marcus Mariota connected with Rishard Matthews for an eight-yard touchdown to give the Titans their first lead of the game, 20-16, with 13.5 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.
The score capped a 12-play, 84-yard drive that took seven minutes off the clock.
The Titans scored 17 consecutive points after trailing 16-3.
Mariota also led an 11-play, 43-yard drive that gave the Titans a 23-22 lead on Succop’s 50-yard field goal with 1:07 to play. But they left too much time on the clock.
Titans offense surges in no-huddle
The Titans heavily relied on the no-huddle to score on the last drive of the first half and first drive of the second half to chop the deficit to 16-13.
Walker helped make up for the turnover with a four-yard touchdown catch with 29 seconds remaining in the second quarter, as the Titans zipped 79 yards in six plays and 1:08 to cut the Niners’ lead to 16-10 at halftime.
Mariota completed 5 of 6 passes on the drive, including 27- and 25-yard receptions by Rishard Matthews. The Titans also picked up 15 yards on a roughing the passer penalty against Elvis Dumervil.
The Titans continued moving the ball to open the second half, but settled for a 31-yard field goal after driving 62 yards in 14 plays and 6.5 minutes.
Defense keeps Titans in the game
The Titans’ early struggles went from bad to worse when tight end Delanie Walker, who had already dropped a potential touchdown, fumbled fighting for extra yards with the Titans trailing 13-3 with 4.5 minutes remaining in the second quarter. Niners linebacker Brock Coyle stripped it out. Cornerback Adrian Colbert recovered at Titans 46. Going from bad to worse. 4:27, 2Q.
The 49ers drove to the Titans 10-yard line, but the defense forced a stop, holding San Francisco to its third field goal of the day.
Logan Ryan injured
Titans cornerback Logan Ryan left the game with an ankle injury in the second quarter.
Ryan has played exceptionally well of late, returning from a concussion last weekend to stifle Cardinals star Larry Fitzgerald.
Ryan had been looking forward to facing Garoppolo, his former teammate with the Patriots.
LeSean Sims and Brice McCain saw additional snaps in his absence.
