Star Wars The Last Jedi: Is 'the Force' of Kylo Ren and Rey REAL? Quantum science reveals

STAR WARS The Last Jedi is the latest in the franchise to reveal more secrets of mysterious power known as 'the Force' – but can this energy be replicated with science?

Kylo Ren harnesses the ability with regularity and it appears the trait may have closer similarities in our real world than was previously thought.

In the original Star Wars, Obi-Wan Kenobi describes the Force as an energy that “surrounds us and penetrates us” - this bears an incredible similarity to the four forces that surround humans on Earth.

Gravity, electromagnetism, and two nuclear forces hold the universe together and allow it to continue its existence.

Although it might not allow a Jedi to deflect the lasers launched from a blaster, a theory dubbed quantum entanglement does involve the invisible linking of two particles.

Entanglement involves linking two particles, separating them and observing the effects that can take place over large distances.

This is achieved by placing two objects in the same entangled quantum state.

Although quantum entanglement was not respected by Albert Einstein, modern experiments have shown that if two particles are separated over large distances, they can still be correlated with one another.

If one particle is measured, the other’s state will be determined the same, no matter the greatness of distance.

The theory states that if one object moves, the other will too despite any distances between them.

Force powers displayed by Kylo Ren and the Jedi throughout the series appears to bear a remarkable similarity to this theory.

However, Brian Greene, a professor of physics at Columbia University, has limited fan hopes of them having the force any time soon after stating that a “threat of attachment” remains between objects.

He told Newsweek: “In quantum entanglement, there is a thread of attachment between distant particles, but it's not one that we can control.

“When you are fighting stormtroopers you kind of want control.

Despite a seeming lack of substance, Mr Greene refused to completely rule out a basic similarity of the force to science in the real world and pointed to instances of activating the use of objects from devices miles away as relatable actions to fans of the galaxy far, far away.

He added: “We’re living in a world right now where we exert all sorts of influences at a distance.

“The notion of being able to exert influence at a distance without touching anything is something we obviously do all the time.”

Although the theory does not mean you will see Jedi cosplayers hurling objects with the flick of their wrists, it does hint that there is an existential link between everything in the universe.

Scientists are currently experimenting with the idea of quantum entanglement in biology.
