Tamil Nadu governor Banwarilal Purohit
"Amused by TN Governor's statement. Governor is only the 'titular' head of the Executive, not the 'real' head. Since the real head, the Chief Minister, is cowering in fear of the central government, the TN Governor is exceeding his authority," Chidambaram, the former union home and finance minister, said in a tweet today.
He added: "To be worthy of the office he holds, TN Chief Minister should instruct District Administrations to refuse to participate in meetings called by the Governor."
Vaiko said that the acts of Purohit are of no use for Tamil Nadu and the governor who is non-beneficial to people is not required. Already, the DMK, VCK and other parties are opposed to the governor's tours and meetings.
On Saturday, the governor strongly defended his district tours and meetings with officials, saying it was to subserve his Constitutional function. His reaction came a day after he toured Cuddalore against which DMK and VCK staged demonstrations there.
He also made it clear that he will continue with his visits to various districts in the coming months, and interact with officials and the common people.
Stating that it was the duty of the governor to be acquainted with the true state of affairs in his region, a Raj Bhavan release said Purohit's visits to different districts served that purpose.
