Autorickshaws to ply by meter fare from Jan 1

Coimbatore: Eleven associations of autorickshaw drivers in the city have decided unanimously to follow a meter fare from January 1, 2018 as per the charge set by them.

Citing competition from corporate autorickshaw operators, who follow meter-based fare, the 11 associations in the city are forced to come to the decision in a meeting held on Sunday. The fare fixed by the associations a few months ago, Rs 30 for the first 1.5km and Rs 15 for every kilometre thereafter, will be followed from January 1.

The associations said increasing fuel prices was the reason for their inability to follow the state government proposed meter fare. The government had fixed the fare of Rs 25 for the first 1.8km and Rs 12 for every kilometre thereafter. This is the fare followed by meter-based autorickshaw service providers, who came up in small groups in the last few months.

There are about 2,000 autorickshaw drivers in the city.
