May shows strength in drive to seal Euro deal - EXPRESS COMMENT

UNBOWED by the bruising brickbats and bumps in the road, Theresa May has shown a glint of her steel with her pledge in today’s Sunday Express that she will not be “derailed” from delivering on Brexit.

Dismissing the “noise” of critics, she insists her Government is “getting on with the job”, which should be music to the ears of the majority who backed quitting the EU.

People will be assured at her restated commitment that the UK will take back control of its “borders, money and laws once again”.

It is also refreshing to hear the upbeat tone being struck by the Prime Minister, amid the pessimism that all too often has dogged the debate around Brexit.

She is right that shaping the UK’s future relationship with the bloc is an “exciting part of the negotiations” and there is no reason why both sides cannot prosper.

Mrs May has pledged her commitment and now it is for others to rally behind her.

Squabbling and clashes of ego achieve nothing and only serve to hamper efforts to secure the best possible agreement with Brussels – surely what everyone wants.

A golden opportunity is facing the nation and now is the time to seize it.

It may be an obvious statement of fact but it is worth repeating that everyone pulling in the same direction can deliver so much more.

Vanity and hurt feelings now need to be swiftly set aside because the ultimate goal is of vital importance to the national interest.

The PM realises this and it is time for others to follow her lead.

Pensions lift for young

Politicians are often accused of short-termism so it’s refreshing to see those in charge looking to the future with changes to pension automatic enrolment.

Retirement planning is understandably not the top priority for many youngsters but helping them to save hassle-free will reap the reward of financial security in later life.

The planned extension of the existing workplace savings scheme to 18-year-olds is therefore to be welcomed.

Calculating pensions from the first pound earned also means that employers’ contributions will kick in from the outset.

While auto-enrolment has proved a success story, an estimated 12 million people are not saving enough for retirement.

These reforms should help tackle this problem.

With the changes not due to be introduced until the mid-2020s, there will be criticism of the slow pace but businesses and savers need time to plan ahead.

Remember the adage: More haste, less speed.

William’s big decision

Save the date: May 19, 2018 is shaping up to be a busy one, with both a royal wedding and the FA Cup Final.

Early indications are that the timing of the events will allow viewers to enjoy both without fighting over the remote.

But spare a thought for Harry’s likely best man William.

He may have to choose between being at his brother’s side or, as FA president, performing his usual task of presenting the trophy at Wembley. A tough choice for any man!
