Patiala: In a late evening development the police here have arrested Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) candidate from ward number 59 Gurmeet Kaur Brar, who was declared a proclaimed offender in a cheque bounce case.

Confirming the development, station house officer (SHO) of the Civil Lines police station Simranjeet Singh said here on Saturday that there had been a case pending against Brar related to cheque bounce, in which she had been declared a proclaimed offender by a local court.

A sitting councillor in the Patiala Municipal Corporation and former president of the women's wing of the SAD (urban), Patiala, Brar is considered close to a former Akali minister.

Reacting sharply to the development, former minister Surjit Singh Rakhra said the action taken by the police vindicated the claims being made by the SAD that the Congress government was using the police to win the municipal elections. He said it was quite unbecoming of the government to arrest a woman Akali leader in an operation carried out late in the evening.
