azcentral sports writer Richard Morin rates the performances of the star players from the Cardinals' 20-15 loss to the Redskins on Sunday at FedExField in Landover, Md.
Cardinals quarterback Blaine Gabbert
2 stars
Gabbert was unimpressive and eerily similar to his performance against the Titans last Sunday in Glendale. He was just 16-of-41 passing for 189 yards to go along with an interception and three fumbles.
Cardinals receiver Larry Fitzgerald
3 stars
Although he extended his NFL record to an eighth season with 90-plus receptions, Fitzgerald was extremely quiet throughout the middle of this game — not making a single catch between the middle of the second quarter and late in the fourth. He finished with five catches for 60 yards.
Cardinals cornerback Patrick Peterson
2.5 stars
Peterson posted a relatively muted performance on Sunday but made a colossal mistake when he tripped and fell in the end zone on the Redskins’ first touchdown of the game, a 5-yard touchdown pass from Washington quarterback Kirk Cousins to receiver Jamison Crowder.
Cardinals running back Kerwynn Williams
3 stars
Williams took the lion’s share of the carries among Cardinals running backs and was overall steady throughout the game. He finished with 61 yards on 17 rushes but Arizona was unable to string together a consistent passing game to supplement Williams’ runs.
Cardinals linebacker Chandler Jones
4 stars
Jones set a Cardinals record with a sack in his 12th game and is now just 1.5 sacks shy of the team’s single-season record set by Simeon Rice in 1999. Jones was consistently putting pressure and hits on Cousins throughout the game.
Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins
3.5 stars
Cousins threw almost half the passes that Gabbert attempted, yet still completed more throws than his counterpart on Sunday. The quarterback was 18-of-26 through the air and tossed a pair of touchdown passes. He didn’t have an incredible game, but he was good enough to lead the Redskins to a win.
