Flight secrets: Why pilots will never do THIS when flying as a passenger on a plane

PILOTS never do this on a plane due to their extensive training, it has been revealed.

Pilots: This is what they are never able to do on a flight

The job of a pilot is arguably one of the toughest professions as they are in charge of the safety of hundreds of passengers whilst in the air.

They also have to go through rigorous training, something every six months, as well as physical and mental health checks.

Sometimes pilots take commercial flights where they aren’t in charge and can relax into the journey.

It has recently been revealed why there is one thing that pilots can never do during a flight.

Pilots: From sounds to smells, they are unable to ignore them when flying commercially

When you're cabin crew or a pilot you never switch off

Dan Air

Despite being off-duty, pilots are still unable to completely switch off on a flight.

Cabin crew member Dan Air told MailOnline Travel: “When you're cabin crew or a pilot you never switch off when you're on board an aircraft as a passenger.

“It's just impossible to do. Every call bell that chimes, every 'bing-bong' of a phone call between the crew or the flight deck you find yourself looking up.

“I think it just gets instilled in you from training to always be vigilant and as we spend so much time on an aircraft it's hard to just be a passenger.

They also go back into pilot mode, as Dan Air explained: “I also carry out my "silent review/30 second review", which is where we run through our emergency procedures should there be an unplanned incident and we have to evacuate the aircraft."

It isn’t just the sounds that they are unable to ignore, but everything around them.

Quora user Tom Farrier stated that “Sounds are always useful, but a passenger cabin is often pretty isolated from any sounds that might be indicative of a problem.

"Smells on the other hand travel around quite freely, and some (e.g fuel, hydraulic fluid, superheated bleed air) are pretty distinctive”.

Pilots: When in the passenger seat, they are always alert in case of an emergency

It has also been revealed how to stay safe on a plane by doing something when boarding.

Seat counting for the emergency exit could make all the difference.

Quora user explained how his father, who used to work in aviation security, told him this to make sure it is easier to escape if visibility is low.

He wrote: "Even with emergency lighting, people have no idea how hard it will be to see if the aeroplane is filled with smoke, screaming people, noise, even water perhaps."
