In his inaugural address as Congress president, Rahul Gandhi launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi saying that the prime minister is taking the country back to medieval times.

Rahul Gandhi, who took charge as the Congress party president today in an elaborate ceremony at the party headquarters, a post held by her mother Sonia Gandhi for 19 years, hit out at the BJP for "spreading fire of violence across the country".

"The Congress took India to the 21st Century, but the PM, today, is taking us back to the medieval times," said Rahul Gandhi.

He said that the politics in the country is "devoid of truth and kindness".

"Politics belongs to the people, but today politics is not being used for people. It is not being used to uplift people, but to crush them," Rahul Gandhi said.

Earlier, Sonia Gandhi, in her speech, said that the country is facing an environment of fear.

She said that the Congress workers are not terrified and will not bow down.

"We won't bow down. Our struggle is for the country and we will continue fighting for it. We won't give it up," said Sonia Gandhi

She said that Rahul Gandhi has seen a lot of tough situations which have only made him stronger.

"Rahul is my son. So I do not think to praise him is appropriate for me. But I would say that since childhood he had to bear the brunt of violence. After joining politics he had to face blatant personal attacks that have made him a stronger person," she added.
