Madhya Pradesh Urja Vikas Nigam Limited (MPUVNL) with support from Bureau of Energy Efficiency and the European Union has organized a one-day workshop on Energy Conservation Building Code (ECBC) in the state of MP on Thursday at Hotel Palash Residency Bhopal.

The ECBC was developed by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency, a statutory body of Ministry of Power.

During the workshop, Surendra Bajpai, Executive Engineer, MPUVN told that this code is applicable to all the new (to be constructed) commercial buildings (as defined under the respective municipal bylaws) having connected load of 100 kW or more or contract demand of 120 kVA or more.

The mandatory adoption of ECBC will help the state of Madhya Pradesh in reducing building energy consumption and promote low-carbon growth. This code sets parameters for builders, designers and architects to integrate renewable energy sources in building design with the inclusion of passive design strategies. The code aims to optimize energy savings with the comfort levels for occupants, and prefers life-cycle cost effectiveness to achieve energy neutrality in commercial buildings. It is expected that adoption of ECBC will save 30-40 per cent of energy in comparison to conventional buildings.

Different technical sessions on ECBC was delivered by experts from CEPT University, Ahmedabad, PwC India with European Union. Workshop was attended by representatives from various departments such as MP-PWD, EPCO, Police Housing, Housing Board, educational Institutes MANIT, RGPV and SPA, Bhopal.

As on date, the state of Madhya Pradesh, has more than 1000 commercial building connections with connected load more than or equal to 100 kW and in the BAU scenario, every year, around 100 new commercial building connections are expected to be added across the state. The ECBC will also result in creating social benefits in the state and promote local manufacturing/trade of energy efficient materials/ technologies. The MPUVNL has amended the national ECBC 2017 according to the Madhya Pradesh conditions and requirements. The MPUVNL has already uploaded the final draft of MP ECBC document on its website (www.mprenewable.nic.in) for public and stakeholder review. The notification for the mandatory adoption of the code is expected to be released by next year.

The MPUVNL is going to conduct workshops and trainings to support all the relevant stakeholders to prepare and educate themselves about the compliance and enforcement mechanism of the code. This workshop is first in the upcoming series of trainings envisaged for the future.
