“SNL” is back with a fresh December episode this week as it closes in on the Christmas holiday.
“Saturday Night Live” returned last week with a bit of a Christmas theme, with a cold open in which Kenan Thompson played Santa Claus trying to answer kids’ questions about current politics. But what it didn’t have was Alec Baldwin reprising his role as Donald Trump.
There’s the possibility that Baldwin will be back this week, though. The Dec. 16 episode is set to be hosted by Kevin Hart, with the Foo Fighters serving as musical guests.

James Franco served as host of last week’s episode, with musical guest SZA. Franco was joined by a few surprise guests along the way during the episode as well — his friends Seth Rogen and Jonah Hill, who both appeared with Franco in movies like “This is the End,” popped up during Franco’s opening monologue. And his brother and “The Disaster Artist” co-star Dave Franco made an appearance in a sketch later in the episode, as well.
Before that, Saoirse Ronan hosted the show with musical guest U2 on Dec 2, and Chance the Rapper took on the host role with musical guest Eminem on Nov. 18. The next host and musical guest for Season 43 hasn’t been announced yet.
Though there hasn’t been a Trump cold open in two episodes, “SNL” has had plenty of political news to tackle. Subjects have included the pile of allegations of sexual assault leveled at powerful men, including lawmakers and Hollywood producers, and Republicans’ attempts to quickly pass their tax overhaul bill. “Weekend Update” in particular hasn’t been pulling many punches.
