CHENNAI: Death of wildlife due to unnatural causes inside IIT-Madras appears to continue unabated. A female spotted deer was reportedly mowed down by a speeding garbage-laden vehicle killing the animal on the spot early on Thursday.

The number of animals dying due to speeding vehicles is on the rise on the campus due to increase in vehicular traffic.

As per statistics available, 50 animals had died since 2010 in road-related accidents.

V Mohan, forest ranger, Guindy National Park, told Express that a herd of spotted deer was crossing the road, when the vehicle accidentally hit the female spotted deer.

“IIT-Madras officials themselves caught the driver and handed him over to the forest department. A fine of `25,000 was imposed,” he said.

Sources said, another two spotted deer were killed after being attacked by stray dogs in the last three days.
