Manchester United have been in the spotlight over the past week after their 2-1 defeat to Manchester City on Sunday.

After the game, Mourinho was condemned. His tactics, team selection and negative state of mind was all said to have cost his side dear.

Meanwhile, on the same weekend, Liverpool failed to beat Everton in front of an expectant Anfield crowd.

Klopp was spiky after the game, giving a blunt interview with a Sky Sports News presenter. An act that, had it been Mourinho, would still be talked about now.

Yet the Liverpool boss seems to be immune to criticism - unlike his Manchester United counterpart.

The brutal truth is United, in just over 18 months playing under Mourinho, are in better shape than Liverpool. 

Sure, the Reds’ attack is a joy to behold. And in Mohamed Salah, they have the bargain and player of the season so far.

Yet their defensive and midfield is a mess. And Klopp deserves some stick for not improving Liverpool from the days of Brendan Rodgers.

Rodgers’ teams were also formidable going forward. Philippe Coutinho, Raheem Sterling, Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge made them one of the Premier League’s biggest entertainers.

So the whole ‘Heavy Metal’ style of football than has pundits drooling on occasions isn’t Klopp’s achievement, but that of its predecessor.

Results wise, Liverpool disappoint there too.

Defensive mistakes cost them time and time again. Dejan Lovren should have been sold long before giving away the decisive penalty against Everton last week. 

Liverpool currently sit fifth but the four teams currently above them have better squads and managers. Klopp is not better than any of Mourinho, Pep Guardiola, Antonio Conte and Mauricio Pochettino.

United, contrastingly, are a team on the up.

Sure, the title looks beyond them this season. And even the most optimistic of fans may struggle to promote their chances of winning the Champions League.

But there is definitely something about this side. They may not have the best defence (individually) in the top flight but there is no Lovren-esque character in their ranks.

They sit second in the table with a points total that would have them top at this stage in any of the last four years.

And one chastening afternoon at Old Trafford against City does not deflect from the fact Mourinho has still won two trophies more than Klopp has managed during his time at Liverpool.
