BUKAVU: Eighteen people were killed on Friday when a truck carrying goods and passengers overturned on a major highway in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, a local official said.
"The death toll is still provisional," said Jean Mwanuka, in charge of the administrative district of Bunyakiri.
The accident happened at Bulambika, on the highway linking Bukavu and Kisangani, in the northeast, he said.
A local hospital said it had admitted 20 injured people, eight of them in a serious condition.
The accident happened because of the poor condition of the road, said Mwanuka.
Deadly road accidents are frequent in DR Congo, where excess speed, overloading and poor vehicle maintenance are also factors.
