Bask in warmth of ‘skinned’ sushi

BENGALURU:Embrace this winter with a Pan Asian platter, because dumplings and sushi are comforting. The ongoing festival at Mamagoto serves dumplings and rolls in pop colours, which reflects the ambience of the restaurant.

The three types of whole dishes in the fest are Maki Platter, Aunty’s Platter and Dumpling Platter, in both vegetarian and non-vegetarian varieties. Trying out the Dumpling Platter, we were served five varieties including prawn enoki, prawn celery, lamb roll with parkchoi, chicken and parkchoi and chicken street style. Colourful and steamy dumplings were served with home-made sauces including chilli vinegar, chilli oil and light soya. The taste of prawn and chicken dumplings blended delightfully with the chilli sauce. Besides the usual translucent dumplings, I was fascinated by the parkchoi dumplings because who knew parkchoi made a delicious drape for the meat!

The dumplings were juicy and it looked pretty enough, but more could have been done to add to the visual appeal of the dish. The Maki Platter boasted of sushi made inside-out such as ebi tempura, California roll and chicken katsudon. Chunks of cucumber, crab meat and spicy cheese gave this a creamy luscious texture. The Japanese soy sauce, which was less salty than normal ones, enhanced the flavour by evening out all the other flavours.

The Aunty’s Platter served chicken satay, tofu satay, basil chicken cups and spring rolls and vegetarian variety had corn fritters and highway rolls. The satay skewers were marinaded with a peanut sauce so the smell and taste were distinct. Unlike the dumplings and maki, this platter was spicier, generous with its masala.

The basil chicken cup was a very interesting bite. Minced chicken was served on a small, round lettuce, so you could easily roll it and take a bite. The fresh crunch of the lettuce with chopped chicken reminded me of a good salad.
