Payroll service Gusto said it plans to quadruple the size of its engineering staff in Denver in 2018 as the company plans to add new features to its web-based payroll and benefits software aimed at small businesses.

The San Francisco company, which opened an office on 16th Street Mall two years ago with 25 employees, now employs 250 in Denver. But the bulk of its engineering team — or 60 people — are based in San Francisco. Those jobs aren’t moving, said Rachel Kim, a Gusto spokeswoman. This is an expansion.

“We will be quadrupling the number of engineers in Denver from 10 today to 40, and expanding technical talent for product designers and product managers,” she said. “We’ve had a good experience in hiring and finding top talent in Denver.”

Gusto made a splash in 2015 when it announced it would open a Denver office. Colorado’s economic development office offered the company, then called ZenPayroll, incentives totaling $17.56 million over eight years. Most of those are tax credits that are contingent on the company hiring 1,750 people.

Gusto employs 500 people nationwide. On its site, the company lists 27 job openings in Denver.
