Pune: City
Congress leaders and workers on Saturday claimed that election of
Rahul Gandhi as the party chief was a step towards the organization's revival at all levels.
The workers celebrated Gandhi's elevation by playing dhol-tasha and distributing sweets. Celebrations were held at Congress Bhavan in presence of city unit chief Ramesh Bagwe and other senior leaders.
Bagwe said that Rahul has been a youth icon and with his elevation the party will see a huge influx of youths who have lost faith in the BJP-led governments at the Centre and in state because of their dismal performance in the last three years.
A meeting of party office bearers was held in which a proposal was passed unanimously to congratulate Rahul Gandhi. Bagwe said, "Rahul has been fighting for the rights of poor, needy and uplift of people from the neglected sector. He has been trying to keep the country from a religious divide," he said.
Congress was pushed to the third position in the civic body's election held in February 2017. Lack of coordination among leaders and internal fights were the reasons behind the party's dismal performance.
A senior leader from the party refuted any difference among leaders but admitted that the party had lost its base among voters in the city, especially among the new generation for various reasons but expressed confidence that things would see a drastic change in near future. "Rahul has served as the president of the party's youth wing for many years. He has successfully conducted elections of the party's youth wing and NSUI. The party would see a revival at every level," the leader said.
Another leader said that Rahul has taken up the party's responsibility at the right time. "BJP wave was no more in the country. People are fed up with inflation and unemployment. Besides false promises, BJP has done nothing in the last three years. It is the right time for Rahul to lead India," the leader said.
